Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne illness caused by the dengue virus, can present a range of symptoms. These symptoms typically appear 4-10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. The disease can range from mild to severe, and in its severe form, it can be life-threatening. Here are the common symptoms of dengue:
- High Fever: Sudden onset of high fever, often reaching up to 104°F (40°C).
- Severe Headache: Intense pain, especially in the forehead region.
- Pain Behind the Eyes: Retro-orbital pain can be a distinguishing symptom.
- Joint and Muscle Pain: Severe muscle pain (often referred to as “breakbone fever”) and joint pain.
- Nausea and Vomiting: Common gastrointestinal symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
- Rash: A rash may appear a few days after the fever begins. It can look like measles and often spreads from the torso to the limbs and face.
- Fatigue: Extreme tiredness and general malaise are common.
- Mild Bleeding: Symptoms may include nosebleeds, gum bleeding, easy bruising, or skin bleeding.
- Swollen Glands: Lymphadenopathy or swollen lymph nodes may occur.
- Loss of Appetite: A decreased desire to eat is common among those infected.
